NOTE: Ideal for ages 6 months - 1 year.

Research strongly suggests that music with a tempo of 60 beats per minute helps stimulate the limbic system and support positive emotional experiences. This selection has been recorded at the 60-b.p.m. tempo, and is particularly useful in promoting parent-baby bonding. It also supports baby’s sense of connection with his/her body.

I CAN CARE - “brain-based” movement for baby
(Music: Ron Hiller/RONNO * Movement
Orchestration: Liz Jones-Twomey)

Lay your baby on a pillow in front of you, or on your outstretched legs.

Gently rub baby’s navel and smile. Keeping your hand on baby’s navel, move your other hand up the middle of the body, over a shoulder, and gently down the arm to your baby’s hand. Wiggle those little fingers.

Come back up that arm, over the shoulder, and back down the center of the body
to the navel. Come back up the center of the body, over the other shoulder, and down to the other hand. Now wiggle those fingers. Come back up the arm, over the shoulder, and back down to the navel.

Now, to make a connection with baby’s legs. Keeping one hand on the navel, gently finger-crawl down one of baby’s legs, and gently massage that foot. Come back up to the navel and down to the other foot. Smile as you massage that foot. Continue finger-crawling up the leg, and back to baby’s center.

Using both your hands, sweep up the center of baby’s body, down each arm, and then grasp and wiggle these little hands. Sweep back up the arms, over the shoulder, and down to the navel.

Now, wiggle your fingers down both legs, and give baby’s feet a little shake. Continue back up each leg to the navel.

Recognizing the right side of baby’s body, finger-walk up the center of the body and down the right arm to the hand, back up the arm, over the shoulder, and down to the navel. Continue down the right leg to those little toes. Give those toes a shake. Wiggle your way back up the leg to the navel.

Now, recognizing the left side of baby’s body, finger-walk up the center of the body and down the left arm to the hand, back up, over the shoulder, down to the navel, and down the left leg to the toes. Wiggle your way back up the leg to the navel, and tickle your baby.

Bring baby’s right foot up to the left hand and tap, tap, tap, tap. Now, bring baby’s left foot up to the right hand, and tap, tap, tap, tap.
Grasp your baby’s hands, and draw figure eights together in the air.

Pick up baby and gently rock from side to side. It’s nice to have special time
together.
