2. LET’S HOP (Gallop & Twist)
Benefits: This routine features the four critically important developmental movement patterns presented in the proper sequential order.

First we encounter Spinal Activation (i.e., the twisting movement), then a Homologous Movement (hopping), then a Homolateral Movement (galloping), and finally a Contralateral Movement (running). Practice with these basic developmental movement patterns supports and increases integration of body and brain.

Spinal movements support our understanding of the vertical, postural mid-line. Homologous movements develop a sense of the upper and lower halves of the body. Homolateral movements like galloping support the development of lateral stability (i.e., a sense of the left and right sides of the body). They provide for exploration of each side of the body before crossing the midline, which involves Contralateral movements like running (movements that help with learning to read and write).

NOTE: For more exploration of and experience with these important developmental movement patterns we would refer you to our Catch A Brain Wave Fitness Fun and Smart Fitness, Smart Foods resources, as well as the work of the educators/researchers we credit at the end of "Bonus File."

Twist, Stop, Hop! (Ooh, the Twist, Stop, Hop)
Twist, Stop, Hop! (Do the Twist, Stop, Hop)

Can you twist?
Yes, I can twist!
Can you twist high?
I can twist high!
Can you twist low?
I can twist low!
Now STOP – yeah, freeze!
And hop like a frog, 1-2-3

CHORUS:
Let’s hop
Let’s hop
Down on the ground
We can hop around
Let’s hop
Let’s hop
Let’s hop, and then…
We can twist again

Are you twisting?! Yeah! Sure! Whee!

Well, can you gallop like a horse?
Why yes, of course!
Turn the other way!
Sure, ok!
Now, run on the spot
I’m getting hot!
Now STOP – yeah, freeze!
And hop like a frog, yeah 1-2-3

CHORUS

(8-7-6- 5)
You can really twist!
I Can!

CHORUS

8-7-6-5-4-3-2 1 – and STOP!
Twisting sure is fun! Yeah! Uh, huh!
