7. IMAGINE THIS…. (Creativity & Listening)
Benefits: This movement-to-music experience helps develop listening skills and sparks imagination, with children having to visualize being a tree, a butterfly, and a turtle. It provides a wonderful opportunity for kids to transform their emotions into impressive expressions of creativity.

NOTE: We recommend that children act out what it might look/feel like to drink nectar, glide, dart, dip and sway like a butterfly, etc. Invite children to call/yell back what they think they are (e.g., “I’m a turtle!”).
Consider also:
"Proficient readers spontaneously and purposely create mental images while and after they read. The images emerge from all five senses as well as the emotions and are anchored in a reader's prior knowledge."

IMAGINE THIS….

Let’s use our imaginations
And pretend to be different things
Imagine this….
You’re a tiny, tiny seed
Curl up small
Then grow very slowly
‘Til you’re standing tall

Can you imagine what you are?
I imagine I’m a tree!
Me too!

Good!
Okay, trees
Now, feel your toes become the tree roots
Reaching deeply down into the ground
Then, growing sturdy branches
Wave them around

Now, bend your knees, lean forward
And let your branches sway
Don’t you agree that being a tree
Is a fine way to spend a day!

Stand up, trees
Lift your branches
Reach higher towards the sun
Hey, being a tree can be a whole lot of fun!

Now, imagine this….
You’re a gentle, graceful insect
Sitting on the ground
Learning to flutter your wings
Stand up!
And start to fly around
Keep flying!

Can you imagine what you are?
I imagine I’m a butterfly!
Me too!

Dance through the trees
And glide on the breeze

You land on a flower
And drink the nectar through your straw
It’s called a proboscis!
Oh, yes! Thank you!

Fly to another flower
Now, stop and sip up some more nectar
You have to be strong, to fly all day long!

Now, dip and sway and dart around
Soaring high above the ground!

Can you fly low, beautiful butterfly?
How low can you go?!

Now, imagine this….
You are lying on your back
With feet and arms moving in the air
You’re a reptile in trouble
Your shell IS strong
But something’s wrong!

Can you imagine what you are?
I imagine I’m a turtle!
A turtle on its back!

That’s right!
We know what to do!
We move our arms and legs
And roll from side to side!

Now, flip over
Wow, what a ride!

Okay turtles, start crawling
No need to pack, with your house on your back!
It feels good to move around!

Alright, little turtles, you’ve had a long day
It’s time to go to sleep
Pull in your legs, your neck, and your head
It’s time, little turtles, to go to bed
