It’s Been A Really Good Day
(“brain-based” movement for baby/toddler - developmental movement patterns)

Sit your baby in your lap, or on a pillow in front of you, on the floor.

Start by stimulating your baby’s spine, gently rubbing from the tailbone up the spine, to the top of the head, and back down again. Continue going up and down the spine. [ Purpose: spinal activation]

Now, laying baby on his or her back, have baby grasp your forefingers, and gently spread baby’s arms out to the side, and gently back in. Out and in. Out and in. Smiling at your baby, lift both arms over the head, back down, and tickle baby’s tummy. Lift up, down, and tickle the tummy. One more time: lift up, down, and tickle. [Purpose: Anticipation, homologous movement]

Now, grasp below baby’s knees, and bring both knees up to the navel. Hold, 1-2-3-4-5-6, and bring the legs straight down. Bring those knees back up again, 1-2-3-4-5-6, and bring them back down. One last time: bring them up, 1-2-3-4-5-6, and back down. [Purpose: homologous movement, helping with bowels and colic systems]

Get ready for a race, bicycling baby’s little legs up the hill, around a corner to the right, around a corner to the left, and back down again.

Now, have your baby grasp your forefinger, and lift baby’s right arm up and down, up and down. Now lift the arm and right leg together. Up and down, up and down. Keep lifting. Nice.

Switching sides, lift left arm and left leg up and down together. Continue lifting the leg and the arm together, as you help your baby develop a sense of the left side of the body. Great!

Take your baby’s left arm and right leg, and bring them together. Stretch them back out, together, and back out, together, out, together. Now wiggle baby’s tummy.

Switch sides. Bring right arm and left leg together, and apart.
Pull them in, push them out.
Pull them in, push them out.
Pull them in, push them out.
Pull them in, and wiggle baby’s tummy.

Now, lift baby under the arms, and gently bounce baby on your lap. Count down, 5-4-3-2-1 - and lift baby up in the air. Gently bouncing again, count down, 5-4-3-2-1 - and lift baby up in the air.

Hold your baby nice and close, and gently rock back and forth. It’s been a really good day. It’s been a really good day.
